GitHub Code Citation Privacy Policy

Effective August 17, 2026

GitHub Code Citation has one purpose: convert line numbers explicitly selected by the user on a GitHub file page into a descriptive Markdown link pinned to the exact commit displayed on that page. This policy describes version 0.1.0.

Data processed

When the user selects a line or line range on a GitHub file page, the extension processes the repository owner and name, file path, selected line numbers, and current commit identifier already present in that page. This information is used only to construct the requested citation in the browser.

Storage, transmission, and sharing

GitHub Code Citation does not collect, transmit, sell, share, or retain this information. Processing occurs locally in the current tab. The extension has no developer-operated server, analytics, advertising, account system, GitHub API integration, or remote code. The completed citation is written only to the user's clipboard after the user clicks the copy button.

Site access

The extension runs only on https://github.com/*. This access is required to detect the line range explicitly selected on a GitHub file page, read the repository, path, and exact commit metadata embedded in that page, and display the copy action. It does not run on other websites.

Retention and deletion

The extension does not maintain a database or local history. It keeps the current page metadata only in the tab's memory while that page is open. Closing or navigating the tab discards that temporary state. The user can remove the copied citation from the operating system clipboard by copying other content.

Changes

If a future version changes how data is processed, this policy and the Chrome Web Store disclosures will be updated before that version is distributed.
